National Mining Association (NMA) President and CEO Kraig R. Naasz and the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts have called on Congress to support a technology solution to climate change.  Their joint letter to key Members of Congress underscores the high priority the entire coal community assigns to the development and deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal-based power plants that provide half of the nation’s electricity.  A “Carbon Capture and Storage Early Deployment Fund” as described will not only accelerate deployment of this vital technology but also secure the livelihoods of more than 100,000 coal miners nationwide and sustain future growth in coal communities in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio and other coal states.
