Thermo Fisher Scientific announces symposium for Brazilian mining industry

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a world leader in serving science, is hosting a two-day Laboratory Informatics Symposium (LIS) on 18-19 August 2009 at the Caesar Business Belo Horizonte in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. LIS 2009 will be of particular interest for Mining Managers with responsibility for quality, and Laboratory Managers who supply analysis to the mining industry. The event will focus on the specific data management requirements of the mining industry and will include presentations from leading mining services organisation Sao Paolo-based Interfusao, which is part of the Thermo Scientific Global Partner Alliance.

Registration is free for the first day of the symposium and a second training day is available at a fee for customers who are using Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS and other Thermo Scientific laboratory information management systems (LIMS). During the first day, the program will address the role of LIMS in the mining industry and will present international case studies from the industry.

Product breakout sessions will include a special focus on the SampleManager LIMS implementation by the Brazilian-based company RPM, a global mining operation focused on gold manufacturing. Topics will include ISO 17025 requirements and the role of LIMS in providing documentation for compliance and audit trails related to ISO 17025 and similar regulatory requirements and guidelines. Return on investment and payback studies will be also discussed and a roundtable session will allow attendees to discuss LIMS implementation requirements common to the industry.

Of particular interest to existing LIMS users in the region, the second day of the Laboratory Informatics Symposium will include an in-depth Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS training session. All sessions will be delivered in English and there will be translators for Spanish and Portuguese.

Laboratories in the mining industry are required to manage and analyse the vast amount of data mines produce in order to obtain faster results, improve efficiencies and increase margins. In addition, they need to achieve certification of end products and validated regulatory compliance, such as ISO 17025 and other regulatory guidelines. SampleManager LIMS significantly reduces the time spent manually inputting data and calculating results, thereby eliminating transcription errors. Sample analysis turnaround time is improved and large datasets are analysed rapidly for statistical quality control and assurance. LIMS provides the foundation for a complete laboratory automation solution by integrating with instruments and laboratory and business systems, including PIMS, MES and ERP solutions.
