BJD Hammermills pulverising coal in Western Australia

As IM October goes to press, with a feature on comminution, there is news that BJD Crushers has supplied six BJD Hammermills to pulverise coal at a new co-generation power plant being built in Western Australia. The crushers are part of a $500 million contract for the plant, which will be built at the Worsley Alumina refinery, near Collie. The units are 24 x 20 machines and, installed in two banks of three, will provide ‘round-the-clock’ size reduction of coal to feed each of the two boilers. Designed for a throughput of more than 27 t/h, they will produce a minus 8 mm product from a feed of up to 50 mm. The powerhouse project at the refinery comprises two 340 t/h Circulating Fluidised Bed boiler units that will primarily burn coal, but will also be able to burn up to 30% waste wood product.

These BJD units have gained an enviable reputation for being reliable, efficient machines for size reduction of friable and fibrous materials. Their rugged construction and high reduction ratios make them ideally suited to continuous-duty size reduction of coal; often being employed as primary units when two-stage reduction is required.
