JLT reveals military standard tablet PC capable of surviving pressures of mining

JLT Mobile Computers has started shipments of a brand new version of its JLT8404 rugged tablet PC. Designed and built in Sweden, this upgrade includes a number of technological innovations, including a new ultra-low voltage Intel Atom processor. This energy efficient chip runs at 1.6 GHz, bringing much higher performance and enhanced 3D graphic capabilities for JLT8404 users. The same chip powers JLT’s market leading in-vehicle PCs too.

This version of the standard setting rugged mobile computer also features 2 GB of RAM, enough to run demanding applications comfortably without worrying about running out of memory. The device is available with a choice of Microsoft operating systems (OS) Windows 7 or Windows XP giving users the option to choose their favourite OS and run existing software applications.

In response to popular demand, JLT has equipped the JLT8404 with a high-performance Sierra Wireless wide area network (WAN) module. This built-in high-speed wireless technology is easy to use and provides simple connectivity to wireless networks. The wireless is a perfect match for the tablet PC as it exceeds industry specifications for tolerance of extreme temperatures, drops, shocks and vibration.

The military standard (MIL STD 810F) JLT8404 is specifically designed to withstand harsh environment equally well in the field and in vehicles. It retains its other benchmarking features, including a sturdy IP65 aircraft grade aluminium chassis, sunlight-viewable 8.4-inch colour SunView touch screen, Bluetooth and 3G/GPRS connectivity, and much improved, highly accurate GPS performance for field mapping and in-cab use. The tablet PC is a fully integrated unit, with no moving or external parts, and is water and dust ingress proof, shakes off drop tests to 1.2 m and withstands extreme temperatures range from -20C to +50C.

With the JLT8404, the JLT Mobile Computers offers one of the most rugged tablet PCs available on the market today. Specifically designed without moving and external parts and subjected to severest tests water and dust ingress to IP65, drop tests to 1.2 m, vibration tests at 5,500 Hz/4.5 g RMS 3 hours XYZ, the device will provide years of trouble-free life.

“This is an exciting upgrade for the popular JLT8404. When we launched the original version of this tablet PC, JLT was recognised as having pushed the boundaries of mobile computing design and manufacture. We are confident that the new Intel Atom processor, increased memory, choice of operating systems including Windows 7 – and advanced wireless connectivity will be a big hit with our customers,” says Christian Funk, Product Marketing Manager for JLT.
