TWP Projects, part of the Basil Read group, has been appointed as the EPCM contractor on the Wesizwe Ledig project until December 2010. “TWP’s scope of work entails access routes, fencing, the Eskom terrace, Phase 1 pollution control dam, the ventilation shaft terrace (starting the box-cut), surface drainage and the environmental berm, amongst others, and earthworks are well underway,” explains TWP Project Manager Jacob Mothomogolo. “Furthermore, we are currently addressing supply of essential services, including electricity and water. These and other long leads items are kept in check to ensure the project remains on track from next year.”The R22-million project scope will pave the way for full execution planned to commence at the beginning of 2011, pending the full funding of R6.6 billion by Chinese consortium, the Jinchuan Group. The mine is expected to reach full production in 2021, and will have a main shaft, at 1,140 m, and a ventilation shaft at a depth of 980 m. The results of the prefeasibility study, undertaken by TWP and  concluded in June 2008, indicated that the Frischgewaagd-Ledig complex has the resources to sustain a 35 year Life-Of-Mine, with a total PGM production at 350,000 oz/y.
